"Dog loves the Canidae" 2009-10-09
By Timothy Beuthien (Wi USA)
My dog has had diarhea problems with all sorts of dog foods in the past. We switched him to this a couple months ago and he is doing great. This food was recommended by our pet store and I agree that it is not only healthy, but gentle on my dogs touchy stomach.

"Very Pleased" 2009-02-03
By Courtney Amerine
My dog has been doing fantastic on the new formula. I was well aware of the changes that were occuring with the food because my local retailer took the time to hand out the information sent out by Canidae. I switched my dog cold turkey to the Chicken and Rice formula and had NO PROBLEMS (No diarrhea no vomitting no loose stools)...in fact if anything my dog is more excited at feeding time.

"Beware new formula!" 2008-12-10
By C. T.
Canidae has changed the formula of their ALS recipes. Many, many dogs have become ill after eating the new formula. The web is full of complaints from dog owners whose dogs are experiencing the same awful symptoms (Diarrhea, vomiting, itching, hot spots and even seizures). Do your homework before buying this product. The company changed the formula without notifying the public. Would give zero stars if possible.

"Not brand new??" 2010-09-29
By ooxx
I got the product yesterday. The bag looked like it was opened and glued back together. I was very hesitant to open it but my dog is running out of food... It is just insane to believe that the original EVO packaging is so bad. It wasn't air-sealed and the top fold looks messy. Again, it looks like some one roll it and glue it together. (like how we would seal it at home!!) This is the first time I got such a bad quality dog food product. VERY disappointed. And I do demand an explanation if the seller cares about their business!! I will not recommend this to anyone.

"Company (Natura) sold to Proctor and Gamble ~ terrible!"
 2010-05-20
By LCM (Washington)
Natura makers of Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise, and Karma have sold to Proctor and Gamble (maker of Iams/Eukanuba) which are know for their poor ingredients and animal cruelty. I have been feeding my cat Evo and they have done really well on this. However, after this sale we can expect the quality plummet and, of course, I don't want to support this company known for their animal cruelty. I will never buy this line again and urge everyone to do the same. I am so glad my pet store notified me of this. After the sale is final they plan to discontinue carrying this line ~ which tells you something.

"Finally found the right one" 2010-04-28

After years of searching for the food my dogs would like I finally found the kind of dry food I don't have to mix with real beef or chicken to make it tasted. They love it.

"Outstanding Quality" 2010-01-17
By Dquit216 (San Diego, CA)
I can honestly say that I have done my research on high quality foods for my cat and dog. Evo has the highest meat content in any dog food I've seen. My dog loves the small bites. It is very high in protein, so I do not recommend this to people who have little dogs unless they are very active. I have a 8mo old Belgian Malinois and her breed needs good quality food as she is a working dog. She did have diarreah in the beginning, but I think its because I switched it from red meat to chicken too fast. So, if you are planning to switch to Evo, just make sure you take at least 10 days to fully switch it to Evo. I am serious, I never wait that long, but with this high of protein, you really need to transition this food slowly. Otherwise, your dog will have a rumbling tummy and possibly poopy accidents in your house.

The wet food is amazing too. It contains quality ingredients and even smells decent. I wish more people would buy better quality food for their pets. Its such a shame to see dogs eating Kibbles and Bits or Pedigree or basically anything you buy from Walmart or Target. All those contain are fillers and by-products.

"Good product" 2010-08-14
By Iko (Japan)
I spent a lot of time researching premium puppy foods and settled on Wellness. I wanted a food that didn't contain corn or wheat and other non specific meat products. My 14 week old puppy had no trouble switching to Wellness, in fact she is no longer picking around her dry food like she was on the previous brand I bought. She hasn't been on it long enough for me to have noticed a change in condition or coat, but i'm confident it will. My only complaint is that the so called 're-sealable' bag doesn't actually reseal.

"Love this-no fillers, just good ingredients." 2010-05-29
By A. Beach (USA)
My breeder recommended this food and I'm so glad we have stayed with it. My puppy is 16 weeks old and has been on this food since she was weaned. I have been feeding it to her and she has put on 1/2 a pound in the last 5 weeks on it (she is a chihuahua and was 1 1/2 lbs when I took her home and at the vet's office today she weighed a hefty 2 pounds). I love that the first ingredients are a good source of protein and that there is a mixture of fruits and veggies for her too. It's a little more expensive, but totally worth it.

"Best dog food!" 2010-05-14
By fake name (Las Vegas)
This is the best dog food I've found for both of my dogs. It was recommend by my vet as she had a long bout of pancreatitis and requires a low-fat diet with easy digestibility. This dog food is the lowest percentage of fat that I have found at less than 2%(most are at around 8-16%) . As well as nutritious and protein-packed for my 6-month old puppy.

Spot's Stew has no fillers and all-natural human-grade food. The chicken Halo Spot's Stew actually smells like a campbell's soup that I've bought and eaten for myself. My dogs both love it and are always excited to eat their food. It's expensive, but their health is worth it. Highly recommended.

"My 2 dogs refused to eat the Halo can and Halo treats" 2009-02-19
By nan
I have been cooking for my dogs after the dog food scare. When I saw Halo dog food and treats advertised I liked the ingredients. I got a few cans of Spot's Stew chicken and a few cans of Spot's Stew beef. I also got Halo Liv-a-Littles beef and chicken treats. For 2 days I gave them 1 can of chicken and 1 can of beef and they refused to eat it. They also refused to eat the treats. I'm not saying not to try it because it looks healthy. I am just saying this because maybe you should buy a can to see if your dog/dogs like it before you commit to a case of food.

"Concerned Consumer" 2008-07-13
By CPOM (Northeastern NJ)
I've been using this product along with the dry food since mid-May 2008 for my mini-schnauzer puppy. She loved it. Then, about 1 month later, she became very ill with something we attributed to toxicity or a bug bite and she miraculously improved, literally overnight, with IV fluids, fasting, and not other treatment. She hadn't been quite right since then.

She started eating her food with less vigor; she used to clean her plate but not any more. She had alternating vomiting and diarrhea episodes, where she became really depressed and, after 2 weeks, she lost the desire to eat or drink and ended up back at the emergency hospital with the same symptoms as the first incident. Her blood work was a disaster: lethal levels of sodium and chloride, high cholesterol, bad kidney function and extremely low glucose levels from the vomiting. She stayed at the hospital for 2 nights (IV fluids the first day only). She was better the next day---the same as the first time. My vet had no clue what it was. He checked for Addison's disease, liver shunts, diabetes insipidus.... nothing. We consulted two other vets, my breeder, my breeder's vet... no one new what was wrong.

The day she left the hospital, her blood work showed vast improvement: sodium down from 200 to 167, glucose up, cholesterol down at least 200 pts (it was about 569 when she came in). I brought her home, fed her Halo food (she love it), fed her again in the morning and, 3 hours later, she crashed again---diarrhea, vomit, depression, drooling.... the same. Took her to the vet again, he gave her fluids and put her on the prescription dog food W/D. I brought her home, fed her, fed her again in the morning, fed her again at night and here I am, the next day, with the energetic puppy I hadn't seen in weeks (she's only 4 1/2 months old). Her blood work is back to normal.

I honestly don't know if it's the Halo dog food that made my dog so sick she nearly died three times in as many weeks (it's hard for me to believe any pet food could cause such a violent reaction) but I needed to put this here in case anyone has had this happen or can offer any insight. These are relatively new formulas so I would just advise anyone with ANY pet food to watch your dog closely for any changes in their behavior---even a month or two after trying a new food--- especially in light of the previous problems with pet food contamination. You really never know so it's better to be safe than sorry, for your pet's sake.

"the only canned food for my dogs" 2007-11-21
By nic (los angeles, CA)
my dogs are raw fed, but on the very rare occasion that I have to board them (most boarding facilities will not feed raw food) this is what we use. it's all natural, human grade foods processed in a USDA kitchen; this absolutely the best canned food you can feed. my dogs love it, and I've never had any problems with them going from raw food to this, and back again.

"have been using for several years but........." 2010-08-23
By sandy spezzano
Enjoyed this product for several years. They have however made changes to the recipe...changing the type of calcium added and other ingredients that seem to have changed. Seems like there is more powder added to the vegetables in the Europa. So white with calcium you can't even tell the colors of the vegetables. I have written them to inquire about the ingredient changes but haven't heard anything back yet. My dogs don't care for it much anymore. It always seems that when a company has a good product they eventually change it to cut costs and it goes downhill from there. Hope this isn't the case with SOJOS.

PS. Did hear back from Sojos after resending and asking for a courtesy response. They have changed the formula from calcium carbonate to tri-calcium phosphate with added Vitamin D. For folks with kidney patient dogs..please do your homework about the effects of the tricalcium phosphate (phosphorus)on kidney patients.Sojos makes a good product. I hope they reconsider this recipe change so that it will be safe and healthy for all dogs.

"Was a 5 star product....." 2010-07-20
By A. Forbus (Kerrville, TX USA)
I loved this product until they changed the formula. The newer version, while they claim it offers more calcium (which is great), has caused the product to be extremely messy. I know it sound minor, but when the ENTIRE area surrounding the container or bag is completely covered in dust, you will be annoyed. In addition to the mess, the additional powder/nutrient essentially cut down the amount of food in the bag since the weight did not increase. When I scoop out a portion now, it is hit or miss as far as whether I am going to get 60% or more powder & I worry about the caloric intake my dogs are or are not getting now. If you are okay with a huge mess and paying more for less (I have two dogs, so the difference is significant), the product is excellent. Unfortunately, this new change probably result in me looking into other food options for my dogs.

"great but dogs get tired of it" 2010-07-11
By Anyam
This is one of the only foods that our border collie has been successful with in terms of allergies and other unwanted side effects of various other high quality grain free foods. We have tried many things but always come back to Sojos. Only problem is she gets tired of it after a while even though we switch up the meats. This is why we keep trying to find something she wont get tired of that will work for her itching allergies. So far no luck - and it seems to be back to Sojos grain free every time.

"Good, but inconsistent" 2010-05-27
By Carolyn Ellis (Los Gatos, CA)
I think this is a fabulous product, but I do have an issue with the inconsistent product quality. This last batch was really slimy and some previous batches had a lot of excess green flakes (broccoli?). Most of the dogs that I know of that eat this product at some point stopped eating it (probably sick of it). I would suggest alternating with other types of dog food.

"Prefer this to Honest Kitchen Grain Free - Low Phosphorous content" 2010-03-20
By Judy Shafer (Oregon)
Although a canine nutritionist insisted Honest Kitchen was better than Sojo's grain free, I like this better. The Honest Kitchen is ground very fine to aid digestion (I assume) but it just doesn't hydrate as well. The Honest Kitchen Preference is essentially the same as this product but even though you add the proper amount of water to hydrate and wait the necessary time, it remains dry and powdery. If you add more water then it gets soupy. This Sojos' hydrates very nicely, the bit of vegetables are small enough that a human could digest. So if you are looking for something to add meat or canned dog food to this is the best product that I have I've found. I was looking for a low phosphorous food to reduce to load on my dog's kidney since she is now a senior. After 5 years of age it is now recommended you reduce the phosphorous content in your dogs food since so many, many dogs are dying of kidney issues which some say is linked to dry kibble. If you like dry kibble, Royal Canine makes a senior food which has the lowest phosphorous content of any kibble I have researched. I'm switching back to Sojos. It also appears to be kinder on my dog's stomach than the Honest Kitchen. HK makes great products and I will still use some of their with the meat already added.

"Only food my little dog will eat!!" 2010-08-16
By M. Ender
Our little guy, who looks just like the one on the package!! loves this food. He particularly likes these in the 'sauce'. I have tried to switch him to less expensive canned foods over the past 3 years, and he just does not like them nearly as much and in many cases prefers to go hungry then eat Alpo or Purina cans. I put this down on his little plate and it's gone in 2 minutes.

I don't know what the other lady is talking about-- I think she has this food mixed up with the Dog Whisperer's line -- mistake. This is not his line at all. Just a similar name.

There is very little meat in this food and there are toxic chemicals.
Various Meat By Products--lower quality than whole meat or meals and harder to digest than actual meat.

Caramel coloring is only necessary when there is not enough meat. Caramel color may be carcinogenic.
"Liquid Top Sirloin flavor" "Grilled chicken flavor"-- Flavoring is only necessary when the product has insufficient meat. Top Sirloin flavoring is made from manure of cattle.

Carageenan causes cancer, including breast cancer. Read an interview with Joanne Tobacman, MD, professor of internal medicine, University of Iowa at [..]

There are no vegetables in this food.

Cesar has repeatedly stated that his entire goal in coming to the United States was to go to Hollywood and be famous. I think that that focus on fame (and money) is apparent in his approach to dog food: Give crummy food nice packaging and an appealing name.

That one's dog will eat it is no advertisement. First, the only thing one really has to do to sell dog food is make it so the dogs will eat it. That the dog will eat it is no measure of the quality or benefit of the food. Dogs eat anything--including manure, which is part of this food as the meat flavoring.

"Excellent Allergy Response!" 2010-05-27
By Carol R. Slicher (Pasadena, Maryland USA)
My 10 year old cocker spaniel has been treated for chronic ear and paw yeast infections for the past 9 years. He's had chronic, stinky black gunk in his ears and a black waxy substance covering his toes. I would guess that I've spent thousands of dollars on vet visits, tests, shampoos, ear medications, wipes, antibiotics - you name it - none of which worked for more than a week. My vet even tried a "new" process where the dog's ears were filled with some type of medication every week (at the vets - $50 a week) for a couple of months - but there was no improvement. My poor dog has scratched himself raw and spent much of his day licking and digging at his yeast-encrusted paws or scratching his sore, smelly ears. Recently, I've been bathing him every 2 days with Malaseb Shampoo (which did seem to help), but he had to stand for 15 minutes with the shampoo covering him, before the medication could be rinsed from his skin. Poor little dog.

While on a trip to Florida, I took my spaniel to a new vet who prescribed more ear drops, wipes, and shampoo in an attempt to help my dog. The vet asked me if I'd ever tried changing his food from Eukanuba, which he's been on since he was a puppy. No vet had ever mentioned that my dog could be allergic to his food and it seemed so simple. I found Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison at Petco and thought I'd try a food trial. What a difference! In the two weeks since he's been on this dog food his yeast infection appears to be gone. His ears are clear, with no discharge or irritation and the skin on his paws is starting to look pink and healthy. I can't believe the difference in such a short time! He's not scratching, either. The Florida vet had said that a food trial would require at least 2 months, but I'm seeing such an improvement in only 2 weeks. Pretty amazing!

This food is wonderful for dogs! It's healthy and doesn't contain all the fillers that most dog foods do. We saw an instant change in our dogs skin and bowel movements for the better. Now, any dog we get will now eat Natural Balance LTD. Our vet recommended this to us after our boston terrier got bladder stones, wish we would have known about it sooner.

Natural Balance Pet Foods,® Inc. Issues A Voluntary Nationwide Recall on Specific Venison Dog & Cat Food Products

Contact:
Consumer Inquiries:
(800) 829-4493

Media Inquiries:
Daniel Bernstein
310-275-0777

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Pacoima, CA -- April 17, 2007-- Natural Balance, Pacoima, CA, is issuing a voluntary nationwide recall for all of its Venison dog products and the dry Venison cat food only, regardless of date codes. The recalled products include Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. Recent laboratory results show that the products contain melamine. We believe the source of the melamine is a rice protein concentrate. Natural Balance has confirmed this morning that some production batches of these products may contain melamine.

The recall was prompted by consumer complaints received by Natural Balance involving a small number of cats and dogs that developed kidney failure after eating the affected product.

Dogs or cats who have consumed the suspect food and show signs of kidney failure (such as loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) should be seen by a veterinarian. We recommend our customers immediately stop feeding our recalled venison products regardless of date code and return unused product to their retailer for a full refund.

The products are packaged in bags, cans and zip lock treat bags and sold in pet specialty stores and PetCo nationally.

No other Natural Balance products are involved in this voluntary recall as none of our other formulas include the rice protein concentrate.

Although the problems seem to be focused on a particular production period of the venison products, over the last four days we have notified our distributors and retailers by phone and e-mail to immediately stop selling and return all recalled Venison dog foods and treats and the Venison dry cat food. Venison canned cat food is not involved.

The source of the melamine appears to be a rice protein concentrate, which was recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination.

We continue to work closely with the FDA in their ongoing investigation.
Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-829-4493 or email [...

Breaking Voluntary Recall News: Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Our canned food manufacturer, American Nutrition, from Ogden Utah, just informed us that they are recalling all canned products made in their plant that contain rice protein concentrate. American Nutrition continued by telling us that they added this ingredient to four of our canned products without our knowledge or consent. The four products involved are:

Chicken Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Lamb Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Beef Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Ocean Fish Formula Canned Cat Food 3 oz & 6 oz

There have been no illnesses reported related to feeding these formulas, however, to comply with the American Nutrition recall of the four products, we are pulling all dates and batches of these four formulas. We also ask that our customers return unused product for a full credit to their store.

To make sure that this does not happen in the future, we are demanding from each of our co-manufacturers daily production record of all of our formulas before they are shipped to us and written certification of NO rice protein or any deviation of our formulas. We have reviewed all of our other products and determined that they are free of rice protein concentrate and that all of our other product labels are accurate.

 "Suspicious" 2010-09-20
By D. Leschke (Tulsa, OK)
I was very excited to try this food. We have an older JRT who is not a finicky eater, but isn't crazy about dry food.

I was hoping to find another healthy food to rotate.

When my order arrived, it contained 2 rolls of Natural Balance and a 5# bag of Natural Balance dry food.
When I opened the bag of dry food, I gave her a few pieces to taste and she loved them.

So I mixed the dry food with the remaining other dry food in a large container.

Then I switched her morning food to the roll instead of her usual canned or pouch food.

Again, she loved it, but became very ill within a few hours.

She was throwing up and developed loose stools.

Our girl was completely listless and wouldn't eat anything but grass.

Today I switched her back to her previous food and she seems much better.

She's still not back to normal, but obviously feeling much better than yesterday.

I know it sounds like I'm jumping to conclusions, but I searched for complaints on this brand and found many similar and worse stories at [...].

We're not going to use the rest of this food. I only wish I hadn't mixed the dry food with another high priced food because now I'll have to toss all of it. I had also purchased some of their canned food. It's all going into the trash.

The food looks and smells great and our dog was nuts about it initially.
Just be careful if your pet shows any signs of illness after introducing a new food.

I'd rather waste a few dollars than risk the well being of our beloved pet.
Too many companies who make food and treats for our beloved pets have been compromising quality to increase profit.
Our pet is going to be fine. She hadn't eaten much of whatever made her so ill and I'm not going to risk repeating it.

In the future, I will research complaints before trying a new brand or just start making our own.

"Portion control" 2010-09-12

This product came on my radar when my dog's clicker training puppy kindergarten teacher suggested it. In a visit to the San Diego Wild Animal Park later that week, I learned their handlers use Natural Balance formula (and clickers!) to keep their cheetahs under control and in good shape.

This treat is great because you can chop it into much smaller morsels than dry kibble treats. Smaller treats let you practice more with smaller breeds before they get full/thirsty/bored.

Since the 4 lb roll itself is an epic portion for a small breed puppy (see img), I keep the bulk of it frozen and refrigerate about a week's worth slice in a sandwich bag for easy access.

I have one of the pickiest dogs. He dislikes everything. The only things he eats are people food..........but not anymore! He loves this. I give it to him as a snack too and he can't get enough of it. I notice that his coat is shinier since he has been eating this.

These smell great--like smoked dried salame. Once my father accidently sliced up a few to prepare them for his lunch before he saw the words "Dog Food" on them. That would have been funny.

Actually I have tasted these myself (as I do with everything I feed my dogs) and they are indeed quite good. Not salty nor gritty. It's like compressed mixed dried sausages.

I grate these into a scoop of Natural Balance Ultra dry kibble and the dogs simply can't get enough. They go crazy for these as treats also. A healthy alternative to expensive high-carb junkfood treats that beggin strips, snausages, greenies, milk bones, puperoni, canine carryouts, etc...

You know the food is good when you can use it as treats...

"Tastes Great!" 2009-04-22

My wife and I are senior citizens on a fixed income, though not as fixed as it was six months ago. If you are like us and looking for a reasonably priced and tasty source of protein in a well-rounded package with other vital nutrients, look no further! This stuff is delicious. Don't be surprised when unsuspecting dinner guests ask for the recipe. We just reply that it's a family secret. The only con I can think of is having to choose between the beef, the lamb, and the turkey. But why choose? Just buy all three.

"My Dogs Love This Stuff" 2010-08-22
By KB
We have 4 small dogs and our challenge has always been to find a natural, healthy dog food, made especially for small dogs, that our dogs actually enjoy eating! They are very particular! Simply said, they love this dog food. With other brands, we could usually just leave food in the bowl and the dogs seemed to eat only when they absolutely had to for survival. Now we have to put portions in their bowls because they will eat as much Blue Buffalo as they can... every kernel! I think they would eat until they explode if we didn't "police" the food bowl! We've tried every dog food on the grocery store shelves and this is the best. I know if our dogs had thumbs and type this review, they'd give Blue Buffalo five stars.

"Great dog food for all ages" 2010-10-02
By James Dilport (Brecksville, Oh. USA)
I have new 72lb mixed 1.5 year old pup, who was losing hair at age 1. I read on the internet that he may be allergic to his food and may need more protein in his diet. So I started him on this food, and one 3mg melatonin, and 1 salmon fish oil tablet and he is absolutely beautiful now. His hair is shinny and he is real healthy. Now my old 15 year old dog Grizzly is a 100 lb Rottweiler & Golden Retriever mix, he is the best dog I ever had. The vet said he has lived more then twice the normal age for his breeds. Well Grizzly is also on this food and his hair is shinny, I also give him 2 to 3 Dasuquin tablets a day, and he can still get up 2 steps in to our house.

I highly recommend this food.

"Our Shih Tzu loves this food from Amazon" 2010-07-18
By R. Clancy (Florida)
Our dog was put on a "special diet" years ago (he is 9), as a result of constant diarrhea and skin problems. The vet

put him on Iam's, which helped with the symptoms, but he always acted as if he was starved. The Taste of the Wild changed

all that. He is healthy, active, and satisfied with this food. No diarrhea ever, great consistent bowel movements, good coat and no bad breath.

"My Dog LOVE'S his food !" 2010-05-22
By Brandy Hewitt
After adopting my German Shepard/Husky mix I noticed he had an allergy to the dog food his Vet. and Humane society recommended. Can dogs be allergic to grain? So I immediately did research. Ordered a sample pack and he LOVED IT! So I ordered a bag in 2009, and now I ONLY buy this product for his food. His coat is glossy, his teeth clean, and his body is so lean. He was under weight when we adopted him and now he's at a good weight, active and loving his food. I also noticed the change in the recipe, but I didn't tell him. A GREAT PRODUCT for those who want to feed their dogs REAL food. Dogs don't need all that extra grain, Brewers Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Oat Meal, Whole Grain Wheat...THERE'S your FAT---THERE'S the ingredients your dogs DON'T NEED. I totally recommend this product.

"WARNING! Formula Change!!!!!" 2010-04-08
By Eric Lopez (Tampa, FL)
First of all I would like to say that my puppy LOVES this food! I have a 4 month old Lhasa Apso and he licks his bowl well after he has finished eating. When I first got him the breeder had him on Purina Puppy Chow. The first thing I wanted to do was to switch him to a high quality, no grain diet and after alot of research and reviews,Taste of The Wild always came on top(dollar wise). After the switch I immediately noticed a difference in my puppy. His coat is starting to shine and is sooooo soft to the touch. He has so much energy now and he has less eye discharge and less ear odor(due to being allergic to the Puppychow). My only problem I have with this product is when I went to my local pet store to buy him a 15lb bag. I immediately saw on the bag "Now made with Purified Water and More Bison" and I thought to myself; "wow they made it better", but after reading the ingredients boy was I wrong. They might have added more bison but they totally eliminated venison from the list. Venison was the second ingredient but now its lamb meal. What once this dog food had four meat products as its main ingredients(Bison, venison, lamb meal, chicken meal) now has three(Bison, lamb meal, chicken meal). More bison or not the exclusion of venison takes away some of the "wildness" of the formula in my opinion. Sure it still has roasted venison down the list but it just that, DOWN the list. In my opinion they've downgraded the formula but are still charging the same price and I am a little concerned by that. I emailed the company for more info on the "New Formula" before I buy the bag and will post an update soon.

UPDATE!

Just received an email regrading the formula change by the company;

Dear Eric,

"Thank you for your inquiry. I'm glad that your puppy has been doing so well on the Taste of the Wild High Prairie. The formula had to be changed because an adequate supply of quality venison was not available. The change is relatively minor with the venison being replaced with bison, already a part of the recipe. I would not expect you to notice a difference with your puppy. However, if you still have some of the food in the previous bag, I would mix the food from both bags for a few days to avoid any potential issues. If you do not have any food from the previous bag, you could add some plain nonfat yogurt to your puppy's diet for a few days to help prevent any issues. I usually recommend 1 tablespoon per 25 pounds body weight".

Sincerely,

--

Melissa Brookshire, DVM
Just to let you guys know that the formula change might cause some minor stomach issues so adjust accordantly.

"Our Austrailian Shepard..." 2009-04-12
By James Wire (Stranded In, Iowa United States)
Loki eats it with great relish, he cleans the bowl each time he is fed, twice daily. The reason we tried this was based on the vet's suggestion we vary the primary source of protein in his diet. This seems to meet the bill handily. We are anxious to try some of the other recipes.

"bad diarrhea" 2010-09-25
By H. wiboonpong (PA)
My 7 year old beagle loves this food. When we first got it i mixed with her old food for 2 weeks, she would eat all of Orijen before her old food. Her stool was fine during that 2 weeks, but once we were out of her old food her stool became liquidy that it was impossible to pick up. Now it has been 7 weeks and we see no sign improvement... still bad diarrhea.

"Feeding Costs and Guidelines" 2010-09-17
By SilverMare (Fairfax, VA)
Orijen seems to be what experts want us to feed to our dogs. It smells nasty so we keep it sealed and the dog loves it more than Newman's Own (N.O.) Organic dry (no bad smell, dog doesn't like it). We've always mixed N.O. with some (decidedly stinky) wet food. Anyway, I've read that some dogs have intestinal upset with the Orijen food due to high protein content. Others quote the high price of the food. I agreed, but changed my mind when I read the feeding guidelines. Here is a big tip from the Orijen people. "We recommend that you feed twice daily. Simply divide the amount suggested on the feeding guide into two meals, spaced eight to twelve hours apart. You may need to adjust portions as you learn your dog's ideal daily "maintenance" amount, always keeping in mind that a lean dog is a healthy dog!

TRANSITIONING FOODS

"Dogs are often fed the same food, which means a sudden food change makes it difficult for their digestive systems to adapt. That's why it's important to introduce the new food gradually. Going slowly will give your dog or cat time to adjust to their new food and will also reduce the chances of digestive upset.

"Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% old food. Slowly change the proportions over the next three to five days by gradually increasing the amount of ORIJEN and decreasing the amount of old food. At the end of this transitioning process, you should be feeding 100% ORIJEN." ~Quoted from the website of the Orijen dog food.

COST PER SERVING

We plan to continue the small amount of Orijen and see how our 30 pound Border mix rescue handles eating about 1/2 cup of food twice a day instead of the 1 and-a-half cups of N.O. that sits all day until she decides to eat it. So far, the transition period is going very well. She does a pretty nice job picking out the Orijen kibble and leaving the N.O.. So, for 1c. per day, if a 1/2 c. measure of kibble weighs approximately 1 oz on my non-scientific kitchen scale, then 30 pounds of food for 63 dollars is about 16 servings per pound or 480 servings per bag - which is 63/480... about 13 cents per serving @ 2 per day = 26 cents per day? N.O. is (subscribe&save .11 cents per ounce, but my dog needs (but won't eat unless mixed with wet) needs 3 times the amount (1 and-a-half cups per serving which is 6 oz. on my kitchen scale "20-40 pound dog 1-1/3 to 2-1/4 cup) per serving or per day, I don't know, but we feed her 1.5 cups twice a day (6 oz. x .11 cents per oz.= 66 cents x 2 = $1.32 N.O. per day) is still more costly than Orijen at .26 cents per day. So for us, at least, the transition is cost-effective.

Given that a half cup of food per serving is so little food, I'll probably supplement her meals with something else. Should I let go of the N.O. kibble just yet?

"worth every penny" 2010-08-08
By dog lady
I compete with my dogs in agility trials, and wanted to give my dogs every benefit that

I could to try to enhance their performance and quality of life. I tried the six year old on it first, he had always been fed very good foods and eats well on anything, so it didnt surprise me that he loved it. After a few months, I have seen a positive change in his

overall attitude and energy levels. His "summer" coat is still decent too. I recently switched my 10.5 year old to the same food. He is more fussy, but he liked it too.

The first week he was on it 100%, I noticed he seemed to act a bit younger. I really feel

the higher levels of quality protein and fat,in addition to the lack of grain, have made a difference in my dogs happiness and energy levels.

"orijen" 2010-08-05

This is a super premium dog food, but if you are a first time user, beware, it can cause stomach upset and diareah. Add slowly to your dogs old food. Orijen has a high protein level and if your dog is used to lots of carbs, too much Orijen initially will be hard on the dogs stomach. Once you incorporate this food slowly into your dogs diet, it is a great food that will make your dog healthy and happy

"Best in Class Dry Dog Food" 2010-07-19
By HTBK (San Francisco, CA USA)
Pet food has an immense range of quality that we like to roughly categorize into three levels. (1) super cheap food that's basically feeding your dog garbage; (2) food that's a good compromise on price and quality, containing some ingredients that aren't ideal but overall a healthy product; and (3) "price is no object" foods that make no compromises. Orijen doesn't just fall into category 3, it's the best of it. It's expensive, but you will not find a better dog or cat food anywhere.

Orijen is a Canada-based company that raises its own chickens, employs its own fisherman to catch fish and deliver them fresh, uses whole eggs instead of dried egg products, and loads its products with nothing but the highest quality ingredients. It's good for your dog's muscles, heart, coat, skin, and is the most biologically appropriate dry dog food out there. Instead of grains for the carb content that it needs to form the kibble, Orijen uses highly digestible fruits and vegetables with nutritious antioxidants and vitamins.

Check out the first 6 ingredients in this product (the whole list is good, but I have to stop somewhere so this review doesn't get too long): Fresh deboned chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, russet potato, fresh deboned pacific salmon (a natural source of DHA and EPA), herring meal. Meat, meat, meat, good carbs, meat, meat.

Compare that to the first 6 ingredients in Hill's Science Diet Adult Small Bites Dry Dog Food, which I just selected by picking the first large size that came up in a search for "hill's science diet dry dog food." Chicken, ground whole grain corn, ground whole grain sorghum, ground whole grain wheat, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal. Meat, grain, grain, grain, low-quality animal filler like beaks and feet, and more grain. It's loaded with grains that are cheap and known to be difficult to digest, often the cause of allergic reactions in dogs, and not nutritious.

If you want a good compromise product, go for something like Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Dry Dog Food for Adult Dog, Chicken Flavor, 35 Pound Bag, a very good food that's a bit more affordable than Orijen. If you want the best of the best for your fuzzy-faced friend(s), get Orijen.

Final note: this is extremely rich food. Introduce it very slowly, even more slowly than you normally would a new food, and expect some loose stools during the process. We started with 1/6 new food and upped it by 1/6 every week, so we took a month a half to transition completely to Orijen. That helped a lot.
